Finding Connection: The Power of Like-Minded Community in a Children's Book Club

The Young Readers' Club is a children's book club at Talking Circles. The concept is simple: the club is a social platform for avid readers to bond over books and much more. Over the years, this concept has evolved in many ways, thanks to the young readers themselves. Every member has brought something unique to the table. We currently have bird enthusiasts, gamers, chess players, dancers, and writers—to name a few—who bring incredible variety to the club.

These young readers initially met because of their shared love for books. Gradually, they discovered each others' interests and began sharing snippets of the activities they enjoy. Over the six years of our existence, this place has become a home—a place where there is no judgment.

Readers share their triumphs and sometimes seek support for their failures. They even vent occasionally, only to snap out of it in seconds after talking to one another. Each time someone discovers something new, they make sure to share it with the group. Sometimes, they even volunteer to lead activities.

Recently, a brother-and-sister duo volunteered to share two different original versions of a video game they created. They built the game as a way to learn fun facts about how the human body works. Having enjoyed playing the game themselves, they led an activity for the rest of the club. Everyone participated eagerly—their own way of showing support. By the end of the session, all of us had picked up many fascinating facts about the human body. For me, the highlight was learning how the immune system fights back against a big, fat, sinister-looking virus!
