'Wonder' by R.J Palacio Makes Young Readers Wonder More About Auggie

The cover intrigued the group. The question on everyone's minds before they read the blurb, was 'Why does this boy have only one eye?' They read the blurb and wondered more? Does this character have only one eye? What does his face look like? How do his eyes look? What could have inspired the author to write such a book? There was only one way to find out. Read the book!

There was general excitement at the Young Readers' Club. No one had read a book of this kind. Most of them are huge J.K Rowling and Rick Riordan fans with some exceptions who adore many other authors such as Roopa Baliga, David Walliams, Lubaina Bandukwala, Aditi Krishnakumar and more.

As we read Auggie Pullman introducing himself and how he hasn't been to school yet and is about to start school in 5th grade, there were murmurs in the group. When they read about how Auggie felt about being laughed at for how he looks or being seen weirdly like a specimen, the group that is very empathetic towards even fictional characters, paused to ponder. This was unacceptable. No one should have to be subject to this. There was silence. This usually happens when they are startled or lost in thought about what we just read. There was sense of sadness in the air. It was time to wrap up for the day. A young reader quickly asked us not to read too much of the book in the following week as he had exams and will have to miss sessions. "I want to know more about how this story moves along. I wouldn't want to miss a lot." We said we will try discussing a lot so that we end up reading less. LOL!
